Therapy???????

I heard a psychologist on the radio today urge people to seek counselling if they are distraught over the death of a character on the aussie soap "Packed to the rafters". Apparently a lot of people are overcome with grief over this incident. You have got to be kidding me!!!!!!! Do we really live in a society where people's own lives are so inadequate that the death of a fictional t.v character has them turning to professional help and grief counselling????? I would expect this from certain aspects of American culture but i thought that us Australians were a bit more down to earth than that. I understand that t.v is a useful tool for us to escape our everyday lives for a short while and i have known people to cry over sad scenes in movies and books. You would have to have a heart of stone not to feel sadness when Bambis' mother died lol. But counselling!!!!! What is the world coming to? How about a bit of perspective people! 30 years ago, if you had professional counselling, it would have been for a major 'real life' tragedy. Now the psychology/counselling business is booming. There are even psychologists that specialise in animals and pets! (I laughed uncontrollably when i heard that one!) Don't get me wrong, i am not knocking the industry. I myself have seen 2 psychologists and even a psychiatrist in my time, but that was for behavioural problems and anxiety. I'm not saying that my problems are necessarily greater than anyone elses but if you need to seek therapy over the death of a fictional character, you're going to need a LOT more help than you think!

I am pretty sure you will know exactly what I think about this! People needing therapy and counseling after a fictional character dies, is so bloody ridiculous that I am actually laughing right now.

The thought that a fictional character has inspired this kind of behaviour from grown up people, leads me to believe that we really are lacking the amount of inspirational role models from a time long gone.

Where are the Martin Luther Kings, Nelson Mandelas and Joan Of Arc's of our world these days? People are relying way too heavily on television and movies for their inspiration... Actors are just that... ACTORS! I am certain that they will pop up in another show soon enough. Or if you are lucky ;-) A reality piece of shit show, that is probably scripted also.

Although I am not surprised by this, I am however saddened by it. As it really is a truly shallow representation of the culture within we now live.
